Seoul's Subway Line 9 Opens

Seoul's new subway, Line 9, linking Gimpo International Airport and the southern Gangnam area has begun services.

A opening ceremony was held at Gaehwa Station at seven a.m. Friday.

The 25-point-five-kilometer subway connects Sinnonhyeon Station in southern Seoul to Gimpo International Airport.

Trains will make stops at 25 stations, including at six transfer stations: Gimpo Airport, Dangsan, Yeouido, Noryangjin, Dongjak and Express Bus Terminal.

Line 9 has introduced the first express services to Seoul’s subway system, allowing passengers to travel to Sinnonhyeon from Gimpo Airport in 30 minutes.

It will also reduce the commute time from southern Seoul to Incheon International Airport to one hour. The trains that operate on the new line comprise four cars, each with the capacity to accommodate 150 passengers.

There is a seven-minute interval between stops at stations, except during commute times when the interval drops to five minutes.
